Baird edges out in-form Edgell Tim Edgerll on his way to a first race victory in V8s Queensland based Kiwi racing driver Craig Baird has put one hand on the BNT V8s Championship after the penultimate round was held at Manfeild today. Baird powered his United Video Falcon to the overall round win after a great tussle with rising new star Tim Edgell (Auckland) who took out his first V8 race victory in this morning’s first race in his Chesters Falcon. Third overall for the round was former points leader John McIntyre (Nelson) whose Prime Explosives Falcon) battled with Baird and current champion Kayne Scott (Hamilton) who is enjoying a late season resurgence in his Fujitsu Heat Pumps Falcon. The other driver still technically in the championship hunt is Christchurch’s Eddie Bell (Independent Fisheries Falcon) who endured a frustrating day at Manfeild. As the lights went out for the start of Race 1 (12 laps), the field roared into Turn 1 with cars bunched up under braking with several nose to tail contacts resulting in damage to several cars including Bell and Chris Pither. Baird ran wide on the exit after rubbing door handles with Edgell dropping him to 6th but was immediately back on the charge. Meanwhile, Angus Fogg moved up a place ahead of McIntyre before pulling off the track and out of the race on Lap 2 after a driveshaft component failure. While all this was going on, Edgell and Scott were simply gone to open a good lead by Lap 3 from where they were to dictate the race to its conclusion. Baird was soon back up to fourth where he began hounding McIntyre in what became a thrilling dice between two absolute professionals at the top of their game. |

Williams wins - but Short on the right track to the title Martin Short maintains a strong lead in the series with one round left Christchurch racing driver Matt Williams has won Round 5 of the ZOAGN New Zealand Formula Ford Championship at Manfeild Park in Fielding today after a weekend of close and tight racing - but Hamilton's Martin Short is one step closer to the FF1600 title. Williams took out two wins and a 4th placing to top the podium ahead of Auckland’s Nick Cassidy who notched up 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings with championship points leader Martin Short (Hamilton) 3rd overall with a 2nd and two 3rd places. Desperation was evident for the Championship contenders in Saturday morning qualifying as shown by Short claiming the pole position by just 0.068 secs ahead of Williams with Cassidy 0.003 further back – that is just three thousandths of a second! Leitch qualified 4th only 0.286 behind Cassidy and was closely followed by Andre Heimgartner and veteran Formula Ford racer Kim Crocker who was making a one off reappearance. Brett Sullivan, Henry Thomas-Kircher, Richard and Tim Vickers followed with a devastated Matthew Penrose suffering from recurring oil feed system problems. The opening 10 lap race of the weekend was a Formula Ford cracker as Short, Williams, Cassidy and Heimgartner diced throughout with three different race leaders swapping the lead five times. As Williams set the initial pace, he soon found himself swamped by Cassidy while Short was content to remain behind the dicing duo until he was overtaken by Heimgartner. Williams eventually ran wide on the final turn allowing Cassidy to dominate the final lap while Heimgartner drove his best race to claim a superb 2nd place ahead of Short. Williams then followed ahead of Leitch, Crocker, Richard Vickers, Sullivan, Tim Vickers and Penrose who had his oil feed problems return necessitating an overnight engine change. |

Reid latest round winner in Porsches Reid leads Baird on his way to the round win Aucklander Jonny Reid is the latest Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge championship round winner after edging out David Reynolds and series points leader Craig Baird at Feilding's Manfeild motor racing circuit over the weekend.
Heading into the meeting, the fifth of sixth on the 2009/10 Battery Town calendar, defending series champion Craig Baird had a 135 point lead over long-time rival Matt Halliday with Daniel Gaunt third and Reid fourth. After claiming the final step of the podium this weekend Baird has retained his lead in the series points standings heading into the final 2009/10 round at the Taupo Motorsport Park in a month's time. But a horror weekend for Halliday has seen the now US-based international slip to fourth in the overall rankings behind Baird, Reid and Daniel Gaunt. With Reid, Gaunt was one of two fresh faces on the top step of the podium at this weekend's round, with David Reynold's making the most of treacherous track conditions to win the first race of the weekend on Sunday then Reid and Gaunt claiming a win apiece on Sunday. Reid won the day's first race from Reynolds, Baird, Gaunt and Mitch Cunningham after getting the jump on pole man Reynolds at the start, then Gaunt won the reverse top six grid 16 lap final despite race-long pressure from Reynolds and eventual second place getter Reid. |
