Fans to get revved up for V8 SuperTourers with free test day .jpg) Big V8ST test day at HD for fans will be free As the first production V8 SuperTourer took to the track this week at Taupo with John McIntyre and Steve Richards driving, series organisers have announced that the public will get their first chance to see the new breed of V8 SuperTourer racing cars at Hampton Downs on Friday February 10th. This will be the championship's first official test – and watching will be entirely free.
The series will open the doors to the test to give fans a chance to see the cars in action and meet the drivers following huge levels of interest since the series was announced. Almost two and a half thousand people have joined the series' facebook site, and ticket sales for the first round on February 17/18/19 have been exceptionally positive.
"The V8 SuperTourer is an entirely new breed of machine and around Hampton Downs is going to be sensationally quick," explained series CEO Paul Radisich.
"All of the teams have been on very tight build programmes and the test is a serious day for them with two sessions of two hours when they can set up and fine tune the machines, and address any teething troubles. The public have been amazingly supportive so when the question of allowing the public into the test for free came up, we thought 'why not'?
The V8 SuperTourers will test between 11am-1pm and again from 2pm-4pm and there should be plenty of time to watch the cars and grab a few autographs of the big name drivers. For those attending the test day, there will be a one-off offer on ticket purchase when the Early Bird prices of just $30 for a three day pass and $50 for a Grandstand seat for three days will be repeated. |

Cassidy bags big TRS win at Timaru.jpg) Big win for Cassidy at Timaru Nick Cassidy has fought through opening-lap chaos to win the first race of the Toyota Racing Series at Timaru. An elated Cassidy said victory – and the shared championship lead that comes with it - was “a huge relief”.
Having fought through and overtaken pole-man Hannes van Asseldonk on the opening lap – all while fending off the attentions of Southland driver Damon Leitch, Cassidy says the series is looking “very positive”.
“It’s lifted the monkey off my back, for sure. It’s always good to get the first win under your belt,” he said afterwards.
The start of the race was chaotic, Bruno Bonifacio stalling on the front row of the grid as the lights turned green and bringing the crowd to their feet as racers threaded around his car and off into the first corner.
Cassidy, Leitch and Felix Serralles swarmed van Asseldonk, who was forced to give up his lead as the field headed onto the back straight. As the safety car came out onto the circuit Leitch, Cassidy and Serralles had all got in front of van Asseldonk, who was fighting off Josh Hill. Moments later as the circuit went “green” and racing resumed, the fight for the lead was between Cassidy and Leitch, resolved in Cassidy’s favour.
Leitch spent several laps clawing his way back onto the rear of Cassidy’s car but couldn’t get close enough to overtake. Serralles found himself under pressure from a charging Josh Hill, who had also overtaken van Asseldonk. Hill overtook Serralles and closed on the leading two. Leitch was pre-occupied with trying to get a clear run at Cassidy and the pair were visibly slowing. Hill got closer to the two, and made one bold overtaking on Leitch move down the back straight, then opted to consolidate his placing.
Serralles held on for a strong fourth overall, 2.39 seconds behind Cassidy but a half second clear of van Asseldonk. The feature race of the second round is the Timaru Herald Trophy, which will be raced over 20 laps today (Sunday). |

Young gun Lyons makes winning return to NZ F5000.jpg) Young gun Michael Lyons blasts away Young British driver Michael Lyons (Lola T400) has made a winning return to New Zealand's MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series, dominating the first day of competition at the third round at Hampton Downs today. In front of a large crowd gathered for the first of two New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing - celebrating BMW Motorsport meetings at the 2.8 km circuit south of Auckland the 20-year-old second-generation racer from just outside London topped the time sheets in qualifying on Friday afternoon and won both today's eight lap MSC series races, the first - in the morning - from series points leader Steve Ross (McRae GM1), defending series champion Ken Smith (Lola T430) and high-profile former NZV8 and now Targa driver Clark Proctor (March 73A), and the second from Smith, regular UK visitor Mark Dwyer (Lola T400) and Rotorua driver Brett Willis (Lola T300). Missing, unfortunately, from the front-running pack was the driver who won all three races at the second New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing meeting last year, Canadian Jay Esterer (McRae GM1). After a heavy startline accident at the second round of this season's MSC F5000 series at Manfeild late last year the Canadian had to strip, rebuild and air freight out his second McRae GM1 to get it here in time for this weekend's meeting but a fuel leak in practice then full-on engine fire in qualifying put paid to hisefforts to re-join the fray before they had even started. Having also damaged his own Lola T332 in the startline accident at Manfeild, three-time series champion Ken Smith was also forced to revert to another car, in this case the familiar Lola T430 he has used with such effect for the past four seasons. |
